The closest real lake weekend to Washington, DC

Beat I-95 at its own game
The only obstacle is Friday afternoon on 95, and it is beatable. Leave before 2 pm or after 7, and the drive stays a drive instead of a sentence. Or skip Friday entirely: work the morning, sleep home, leave Saturday at 7 am and be on the water by 9 with two full days ahead. Going home, roll out Sunday before 3 or stay for dinner and let the northbound wall dissolve behind you.
What 90 minutes buys you
Proximity changes what a lake trip is. Friday arrival still gets you dinner on the porch and a fire by nine. A two-night stay contains two entire lake days instead of one day and two drives. Forgotten swimsuit? The house is close enough that nobody cries about it. And a place 90 minutes away is a place you go three times a summer, which beats a prettier one you visit once. Groceries are simple: shop before you leave or hit the Mineral Farmers Market Saturday morning and let the lake feed you.
