Lake Anna fishing guide: stripers, bass, and crappie
By Krizia Córdova · September 2, 2026
Lake Anna holds a strange double life. To most of Virginia it is a boating lake, all pontoons and swim coves. To anglers it is one of the most productive fisheries in the state, and the two crowds barely notice each other. If you are bringing rods to the lake, or wondering whether you should, here is the honest briefing.
The headline act is the striped bass. The state stocks them, the lake grows them big, and chasing them is the reason serious boats idle out before sunrise. Under the stripers runs the supporting cast: largemouth bass along the docks and grass lines, crappie stacked in the coves, catfish working the deep channels, and white perch and bluegill for anyone whose main goal is a bent rod and a kid yelling.
Spring wakes the whole lake up. Largemouth move shallow ahead of the spawn, crappie pile into the coves, and stripers push up the lake in their annual run. April and May fish as well as any months on the calendar.
Summer splits the day in two. The early bite and the last hour of light are yours; the middle of the day belongs to the pontoons. Docks with lights become their own little ecosystems after dark, which is a polite way of saying night fishing here is better than most people bother to find out.
Fall is the show. From September into November the stripers school on the surface, gulls hang over the bait like a signal flare, and for a few minutes at a time the water simply boils. You do not forget the first time you see it.
Winter clears the lake out. The stripers go deep, the blue cats keep eating, and the anglers who stay have the water almost entirely to themselves.
Lake Anna State Park has fishing piers and miles of bank access. A kayak turns any quiet cove into private water, especially early. And if you are staying in a house on the water, do not sleep on the dock itself. Docks are structure, structure holds fish, and a worm under a bobber at dusk has saved more family vacations than any toy in the game closet.
Everyone 16 and up needs a Virginia freshwater fishing license, which takes five minutes to buy online. Check the state's current regulations for striper seasons and limits before you keep anything, since the rules shift. And if the fall striper blitz is the goal, the local guides know where the schools are moving day to day; they book out, so call ahead.
Lakewood sits on 250 feet of quiet shoreline on the public side, with a private covered dock, kayaks provided, and coffee a short walk up the path from the water. The dusk shift is a family tradition waiting to happen. Every day is Saturday at Lakewood. Check availability here.
